Robert Canby
Robert is mainly known for his landscapes in oils. He began painting seriously in the early 1960s, encouraged and taught by his sister, Peggy Sanders, a well-known landscape painter. He prefers to paint plein air, in the outdoor setting, but occasionally works from sketches drawn on location, photos, and memory. The mountains and lakes of Plumas County are a constant attraction for him. Bob’s inspiration comes from the natural scenery where he grew up exploring the hills of Sonoma County, California, as well as several years spent in Alaska and along the Columbia River while in the U. S. Coast Guard. His career as a California State Park Ranger took him to some of the most scenic and historic areas of Northern California which greatly influenced his work.
More recently he has been painting in pastels as well, although oils are his favorite and predominate medium.
