How Plumas Arts Has Shaped Arts Education in Plumas County
For more than 35 years, Plumas Arts has played a central role in shaping and sustaining arts education across Plumas County. Through long-standing partnerships with schools, educators, teaching artists, and the Plumas County Office of Education, we have ensured that thousands of local students—regardless of geography or economic circumstance—have meaningful access to high-quality arts learning.

Artist in the Schools is one of the county’s most consistent and far-reaching arts education efforts. By placing professional working artists directly into K–6 classrooms, Plumas Arts has helped embed creativity, critical thinking, and self-expression into the school day. These experiences not only enrich academic learning, they support student confidence, emotional well-being, and a lifelong connection to the arts.
In a rural county where resources are often limited, Plumas Arts has helped fill a critical gap—making sure the arts are not an “extra,” but an essential part of a well-rounded education. Our work has strengthened school communities, supported local artists, and helped cultivate the next generation of creative thinkers right here at home.

Artist in the Schools (AIS)
is Plumas Arts’ signature arts education program, bringing professional teaching artists directly into K–6 classrooms across Plumas County. Each year, AIS reaches hundreds of students countywide, delivering hands-on, in-school arts experiences that foster creativity, confidence, and critical thinking—often for students who may not otherwise have access to arts education.
Over the life of the program, thousands of Plumas County students have participated in AIS, making it one of the most enduring and impactful arts education initiatives in the region. By embedding working artists into classrooms, Plumas Arts ensures the arts remain a vital, consistent part of learning—no matter a student’s location or background.

ARTIST IN THE SCHOOLS
Poetry Out Loud
is a nationally recognized poetry recitation program that Plumas Arts proudly brings to local high school students, building confidence, literacy, and a lifelong connection to the spoken word. Through classroom engagement, coaching, and countywide competition, students deepen their understanding of poetry while developing public speaking, memorization, and performance skills.

Each year, dozens of Plumas County students participate directly in Poetry Out Loud, with many more reached through classroom instruction and school-wide engagement. Over time, the program has impacted hundreds of local students, offering a powerful platform for youth voice, self-expression, and academic growth—especially in rural communities where arts opportunities can be limited.
