Micaela Rubalcava
A long-time Plumas County resident and Professor of Education at Truckee Meadows Community College, Micaela Rubalcava pursues creative outlets both professionally and personally. She says, “I have taught close to 5000 teacher credential students over the years and I infuse art activities to breathe life into education theory throughout my courses so these future teachers will be more likely to facilitate art in their own classrooms.” She exhibited a number of mixed media mandala mobiles, created with recycled brown paper bags using art journaling methods. She explains, “I gathered the hanging sticks in the forest behind our house. I like to use materials that translate fluidly into public school art activities without cost or excessive technique.”

A notable feature of the discs Rubalcava created is their finely fenestrated edges. She observes, “I found punching holes into the lace edges to be kinesthetic and calming. That led me to think of these mobiles as floating gently together to create an atmosphere under which exhibit goers may sit, contemplate, and relax. Art is therapy, imbued with ebb and flow.”
