For the month of April the Plumas Arts Gallery is featuring the work of
Pamela Noel
Plumas Arts is pleased to announce a gallery opening reception Friday April 4th
from 5pm to 7pm at 525 Main Street in Quincy.
I play with scraps of paper-harkening back to the time in childhood when I would wait for my mother's monthly McCalls magazine. Upon arrival I would immediately look at my mom with a child's longing, until she would turn to the "Betsy McCall" page, a monthly paper doll with several accompanying costumes. This became the center of my winter activity, constructing the supporting accoutrements- -furniture and gardens-for my little Betsy McCall.
Sixty years later, I have rediscovered the magic of paper...and the way it continues to fascinate.
Stepping into my studio I feel a sense of joy; a place where I can completely be myself, creating however I am called in the moment. Seldom in life have I felt so free from others' expectations. It is also a place of "no mistakes" because the medium of collage allows me to add, subtract, or even cover the entire canvas with gesso and begin again. Expressing my creative side, through art, has come later in life. A few nudges along the way include a chance introduction from a dear friend to the person who became my initial teacher and colleague. Another friend was willing to transform my garage into a studio. Finally, the company of my brother and the encouragement of others who have travelled their own creative paths helped prime my creative work. Thus, this is not my journey alone.
The shows primary thread is pollen, "we need pollen. We need pollinators. Without them, we would have a difficult time living on this planet. Plants are critical to many aspects of our survival. New research is showing that consciousness in plants, is in fact, and aspect of horticulture. Paying homage to the role pollen plays in our life has been both a life-long awareness, and now a pursuit that shows up in the art I create. mIn many of my creations, I weave microscopic photos of pollen that resemble hidden worlds of color, texture and wonder.
Come by the Plumas Arts Gallery during regular hours to view the artwork. The gallery is open Wednesday through Friday 11am-5pm and Saturday 10am-4pm.
