The 8th Annual Quincy Certified Farmers' Market
takes place this year on Thursday evenings,
from 5:00 - 8:00/dusk, from July 3 to Sept. 4 2008
|

The market is located in Quincy at Church and Main streets (on the old Quincy schoolhouse lawn). The start of the market will be announced by the ringing of the bell in the old schoolhouse, at 5:00 PM.
State health laws prohibit pets at the market, so shoppers should plan accordingly.

Fruit, vegetables, and a whole lot more
|

The market features local and regional produce, much of it organically grown. Local growers include Meadow Valley Organics, Sierra Valley Farms, Dawn Institute, the Stump Farm, Snowy Pine Ranch, and others, while regional growers provide stone fruit, corn and other early ripening produce to complement Plumas County's short growing season.
Locally raised grass-fed Thompson Valley Ranch beef and Hulsman Ranch lamb are sold weekly, as are fresh bread, cookies, and other baked items from American Valley Baking. Also for sale are unique nursery plants, cut flowers, and handmade crafts and gifts. A massage therapist rubs tired muscles on her shaded table, while her daughter does face-painting. Shoppers can dine al fresco on casual fare prepared on site. |

| In keeping with one of the market's goals of facilitating the expression of local art and culture, every week features a different program of wonderful live music and entertainment. Favorite local and guest artists perform folk, bluegrass, jazz, popular favorites, and African drumming (see the Plumas Arts schedule). This year the market will host two local belly dancing troupes, on July 10th and 31st. Entertainment is made possible by financial support provided by local sponsors, who are listed below. |

| The California Certified Farmers' Market designation means that growers must register with the local County Agricultural Commissioner, and that State market requirements must be met. |

| The market honors coupons issued through the USDA Farmers' Market Nutrition program that make fresh produce available to seniors and low-income families (WIC). To sell at the market, growers need to be certified with the County Agricultural Commissioner, Karl Bishop (contact 283-6365 for more information). Contact market manager Tiffiney Rodriguez Lozano at (530) 283-2458 for information and an application to sell at the market. Applications are also available at Quincy Natural Foods, 269 Main St., Quincy.
News for the 2008 Season
Thursday, July 3 will mark this year's grand opening market with Cameron Tummel an internationally acclaimed rhythm and drum facilitator. This show is interactive and folks are encouraged to bring their drums and/or dancing feet! Local businesses are again graciously offering gift certificates and other great prizes in a free raffle open to all shoppers. Winners announced at 7pm. The market is always a fun family event, however July 24 will cater even more to children with the performance of Jeff Keppel and The String Beans, as well as games, prizes, and produce samples, presented by the California Regional Nutrition Network. August 7, market goers will be treated to a solar oven demonstration by Blackhawk Solar. These are just a few highlights--Every market features live entertainment and music! A Thriving Community Event
The Quincy Certified Farmers' Market is the result of the vision and hard work of a dedicated outreach committee of Quincy Natural Foods. The first market was held in 2000, and has grown to become a very popular community event. The purpose of the market is “to promote local, sustainable agriculture and community health, to energize our economy by fostering the exchange of high quality, fresh, regional products, and to establish the market as a means to facilitate the expression of local art and culture”. Several volunteers and the market manager form the QCFM Committee responsible for organizing the event, and volunteers serve as the operations crew on market days. The market has become a “commons”, bringing all ages together in a healthful celebration of our wonderful mountain community.
